In Merced County, Latino and African American youth are overrepresented in juvenile detention facilities. In 2003, Latino youth represented 56.0% of the overall youth population, but 65.5% of youth in detention. African American youth represented 3.5% of the overall youth population, but 5.7% of youth in detention.
