In San Mateo County, African American and Latino youth are overrepresented in juvenile detention facilities. In 2003, African American youth represented 2.8% of the overall youth population, but 15.6% of youth in detention. Latino youth represented 32.3% of the overall youth population and 49.2% of youth in detention.
