Massachusetts: Essex County

In Essex County, African American, Latino and Asian youth are overrepresented in juvenile detention facilities. In 2002, African American youth represented 2.6% of the overall youth population, but 9.7% of youth in detention. Latino youth represented 16.3% of the overall youth population, but 38.1% of youth in detention. Asian youth represented 3.2% of the overall youth population, but 6.9% of youth in detention.
